What Can We do While We are In Stevns?

You’re getting married so our first recommendation is to relax and enjoy your wedding ceremony! 🙂

If you’re planning to spend a little bit more time in the town there are quite a few lovely things to do:

1. Højerup Old Church 📍

When visiting Stevns Klint don’t miss this unique church that hangs on the cliff, almost falling into the sea.

It was built around 1250 by a sailor who was close to drowning and promised to build a chapel if he survived.

Since the church was built the cliff has been steadily falling away causing a serious threat to the church.

A local legend says that every Christmas the church moved a little step towards the land, but it wasn’t enough.

On the 16th of March 1928 a part of the cliff collapsed causing the chorus from Højerup Old Church to fall.

The church was then reinforced against further slides and the vanished choir was replaced by an observation deck.

Nowadays you can go inside the church and enjoy spectacular views of the cliff and the sea.

2. Saint Katharina Church📍

When having a stroll around the peaceful old town you can visit this charming church and the icon of Store Heddinge.

Built at the beginning of the 13th century it was hit by a lightning strike in the 1670s, after which the octagon had to be renovated.

Then the church was thoroughly restored in 1853, obtaining its current form.

Stevns Klint – this spectacular cliff, apart from being a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a reminder of the Earth’s dramatic history, when 66 million years ago an asteroid hit the Earth, causing half of all animal and plant life to go extinct.

Now it’s a truly breathtaking wonder of nature!

You can have a lovely, romantic walk on the beach alongside this 40 metre high white cliff.

3. Stevns Lighthouse 📍

A 27 metre chalk-built lighthouse situated on the edge of the cliff, built in 1878.

You can climb up the stairs and enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the fields and the sea, all the way to Sweden.

Museum Stevnsfort –  if you’re looking for a little bit of adventure and mystery you will find it here at the Cold War Museum.

You can explore the underground tunnels of the nuclear-attack proof fortress built deep into the cliff during the Cold War. It’s one of Denmark’s most secret places with a very interesting history.

If you decide to go on a guided tour get ready for exciting ‘time travel’.

The History of Stevns

If you choose to get married at the town hall your wedding will take place in Store Heddinge, a town in Stevns municipality on the beautiful southeast coast of Zealand island.

It’s a small town with a long history going back to the 13th century when its church, Saint Katharina, was built.

In 1441 Store Heddinge obtained the very privileged status of a merchant town and, in 1838, the Director for the Royal Danish Academy of Art, architect Jørgen Hansen Koch, built the assembly house (which was actually a town hall, assembly hall and a jail all in one!) on the Nytorv plaza.

A famous Water Tower, which is often called the town’s gate, was built in 1911.

10 minutes drive from Store Heddinge you have Stevns Klint, a breathtaking cliff that played an important role in the Cold War.

It was one of Denmark and NATO’s most important (and beautiful!) positions with large radar towers and 1.8 kilometres of underground passageways where, for 40 years, up until the year 2000, the military was ready to go to war at any time.
